Penang CM attends Good Friday mass

Posted:08:19 Mar-22-2008 Filed under: Religion, DAP (行动党), Penang

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng joined some 500 Catholics at a Good Friday Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Island Park here.

He arrived quietly around noon together with the big crowd and joined them in prayers and singing of hymns for about 90 minutes, reports The Star.

When approached by newsmen later, Lim said:

“I am here alone,” said Lim.

“I just wanted to join the ceremony and out of respect to the ceremony, I will not comment or talk on any issue here.

“I will attend all kinds of religious ceremonies and accept all blessings because I honour all the different faiths and religions in the country,” he said.

On Thursday, he and two DAP exco members attended the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebration at the Seberang Jaya expo site here yesterday.

He said that he was glad he was able to attend the function, which was attended by about 3,000 Muslims.

  3. For the information of all readers, there is no such thing as Good Friday Mass for Catholics. On normal days, there are masses, but on Good Friday, masses are not allowed!! Compared to a mass, some things are not done and some extra things are done. Technically, it is called a service.

In general, to avoid dangers of misinformation and misunderstandings due to sheer ignorance of religious practices and procedures, it is advisable to get/check the correct information and terminology from the relevent religious authorities and not assume matters on religious issues. On a number of occassions, the press, bloggers and various people have made claims or statements that flatly contradict what is actually done, practiced or allowed. Ideally, to ensure peace in a multiracial society, all Malaysians should be educated on the various religions and practices, to avoid being misled and misinformed, and make damaging and hurtful statements.
