Anwar ready for power grab

Posted:14:41 Apr-15-2008 Filed under: Keadilan, Anwar Ibrahim

By Angus Whitley (Bloomberg) April 15.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he has convinced about 30 lawmakers from the ruling coalition to join an alliance that would topple Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s government.

Anwar, a former Malaysian deputy premier, is attempting to win over lawmakers from the multi-ethnic ruling coalition to his opposition group.

Anwar plans to wait for more lawmakers to switch before attempting to form a government, he told reporters late yesterday after addressing 20,000 people at a rally in Kuala Lumpur that was broken up by police.

We are ready,'' Anwar said.We want the numbers to be that meaningful so that it is comfortable for us to lead.'’

Anwar and Abdullah are fighting for control of Southeast Asia’s third largest economy. Malaysian police said they stopped Anwar’s rally late yesterday because the crowd grew too large. The same day, Abdullah faced renewed calls within his own party for him to step down.

Anwar led a three-way opposition alliance to its best ever election result on March 8. Abdullah’s national front coalition lost its two thirds majority in the 222-seat parliament and ceded five of 13 states to the opposition.

Anwar, who becomes eligible today to run for a parliamentary seat following previous corruption charges that he denies, said he’ll say when he’ll contest a seat when lawmakers are sworn in on April 28.

  2. Dear Freedom Fighters, both Online & Offline…

I have been supporting the boycott the newspapers initiative for sometime & I have done my push & pull marketing rather we’ll around my circle of family, friends & contacts. A few have stopped buying, some don’t already. A lot whom still want to purchase the papers, I passed on the info - which was the worst in all mediums & urged them to switch to the least worst. For English papers, the worst was the The Star (Spinning & BN coverage). Data can be found on the People’s Parliament.

Now, the story. I have noticed that some, are still purchasing the newspapers, especially “The Star” every now & then, especially on Saturdays for… “The Recruitment Section!”

So, I urge all those whom support this cause to pass the word. Only get your recruitment information online. Do not purchase the msm & even browse through it.

PR & others (mid-long term effort), get more beginner computer classes up. Teaching people to use the comp, get the news, browse & apply for jobs, using the email, etc. Keep the fees very low, give it free to the very poor, catch the young, educate! PR, set up a IT centre in the poor areas, with news printed out & pasted there regularly. Put up a few PCs with internet connections for the poor to share & use for free during office hours.

Check out MT article “My Version of the Truth” by RPK, for some related info.

    Thanks, please pass the word!

  3. I think it is more than likely that the PR will take over the government. But even in its time of ascendency Anwar and Lim Kit Siang must remember why the people have voted for them. It is to restore equality and justice. Therefore, PR must make it its first task to get rid of the NEP and abolish ketuanan Melayu and ketuanan Islam. Then the nation can go on to establsih true racial harmony and work for greater prosperity for all by unleashing the initiative and the creativity of all peoples. In the end, prosperity cannot be confined to a single race. If one race gains greater prosperity, it will spread to all other races in Malaysia as a matter of course. Therefore, willingness to share will logically allow all to prosper.

  4. Anwar must remember that a short 4 years ago Badawi and UMNO-BN had garnered some 90% of the votes. But now 4 short years later Badawi is on the way out - probably never to return to politics. Therefore, as the people have put Anwar into power they could just as easily remove him from power. And the only way Anwar and other PR politicians can stay in power is to do the people’s wish which is to restore equality and justice in Malaysia.

If Anwar think I’m being a pest annoying him with things he must do, then he should realize that I’m giving him the best advice he can get. Because even if Anwar himself forgot about the people, the people themselves will not forget that it is they who put Anwar into power. And comes election time, Anwar will find himself out in the street with Badawi. So, Anwar, do the wishes of the people and continue to lead. Or forget about the people and join Badawi in due time.
