What’s *your* calling?

Posted:08:32 Apr-4-2008 Filed under: Bible 101

Today, I read a very uplifting message by Pastor David Wilkerson:

"Go into a Christian bookstore and read the titles on the shelves. Most are self-help books on how to overcome loneliness, how to survive depression, how to find fulfillment. Why is this? It’s because we have it all wrong. We aren’t called to be successes, to be free of all trouble, to be special, to “make it.” No, we are missing the one calling, the one focus, that’s meant to be central to our lives, to become fruitful in the likeness of Christ."

Happy Easter

Posted:17:17 Mar-22-2008 Filed under: Bible 101

This post may offend some readers. Discretion advised.

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary.

suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father Almighty.

From thence he shall come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Declare Easter Weekend public holiday

Posted:08:09 Mar-18-2008 Filed under: Social, Bible 101, Selangor

Dear Selangor MB,

Please declare Easter Weekend a public holiday to thank the many church cell groups who worked tirelessly to give the BN a blackeye in the elections.

Easter is more important than Christmas in the Christian calendar.

Thank you.

Fear Factor

Posted:09:52 Mar-14-2008 Filed under: Bible 101

Commentary by Soo-Inn Tan, GRACE@WORK

Could you eat a cockroach? No? How about a worm? Or a cricket? Contestants on the reality show "Fear Factor," are expected to ingest creatures that would normally gross us out. I am not a fan of the show but the few times I have seen the contestants squirm, have helped me understand how Peter must have felt in Acts 10: 9-16.

" About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds."

"Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ ‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.’ The voice spoke to him a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven." (TNIV)

All his life, Peter had been taught that certain animals were unclean and not fit to be consumed by those who belonged to God. One could imagine the reaction of a Muslim, or a Jew, if asked to eat pork. But it was time that Peter learnt that all peoples were now equally acceptable to God and to learn it by seeing Him dismantle the dietary laws that separated Jews from other races. ”Continued”

Buffet mentality

Posted:13:02 Jul-30-2007 Filed under: Social, Bible 101

Like Jesus, I’m gonna talk in parable in this post so readers will be kept guessing the next 2000+ years what it’s all about.

Look at this buffet. Yummy or not?

In some societies, a smorgasbord means a all-you-can-eat buffet meal featuring a varied number of dishes.

In others it means skipping lunch so one can attack the dinner buffet with gusto, leave behind a plateful of unfinished food and try to doggie bag more when no one is looking.

In politics also got people with the buffet mentality lah.

In nomine Patris?

Posted:15:43 Jul-8-2007 Filed under: Bible 101
In nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum. Amen*.

It’s Sunday and I have no clue what to blog about, so I’ll pretend to be a Roman Catholic priest celebrating mass in Latin.

Bahasa Malaysia —> Bahasa Melayu —> Bahasa Malaysia.

Now, Latin mass —> native tongue mass —> Latin mass.

Motu Proprio**.

Father, does ‘your’ man in Rome know what he’s just done?

Oremus. (Let us pray)

  • Sorry but there’s no translation because it’s in Latin and you’re not supposed to understand it.

** written on the pope’s “own initiative.”

Sunday School for Bible 101

Posted:22:35 Jun-15-2007 Filed under: Bible 101

From this weekend, we will have a new series named Bible 101. It’ll probably be posted on Sundays, so you guys may consider them Sunday Schools.

Bible 101’s aim is not to convert anyone, but is a community service to explain Bible verses in simply language to people like Alta Mira who is near clueless over anything beyond the span of his sarung.

There are lots of good Bible study software out there, some are great, some could have been better.

But Bible 101 plays a different role as we try to engage the converted and, if invited, will explain more to non-Christians. ”Continued”
