by Soon Li Tsin, malaysiakini, 9 July.

More interveners are expected to participate in Herald’s legal challenge against the government ban on the Catholic weekly in using the word ‘Allah’ in its Bahasa Malaysia section.

Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Lau Bee Lan today heard counsels representing seven Islamic and one Sikh religious council expressing their vested interest in the case.

The appellate and special powers division judge proceeded to fix Nov 21 to give all interested intervening parties in the judicial review adequate time to respond to both the applicants and respondents.

She also agreed with Sulaiman Abdullah, who was representing the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council, that it would be more convenient for the court to hear the applications from all the state Islamic religious councils concurrently. ”Continued”

Our dear caretaker PM limped home with a pathetic 1k victory over Subri Mat Arshad (PAS).

 Malu lah.

Pak Lah, are you lonesome 2nite?

Thank you, Pak Lah, for being an internationally-acclaimed sleeping PM. For if you have been deligient, your BN wouldn’t have faced this electorial bloodbath.

It is time the little mullahs in UMNO understand why people are so pissed off with them. And please lah, get rid of the fourth floor jerks!

Goodbye Pak Lah. I’m sure you’ll be ousted at the next UMNO elections. I won’t miss you. Please turn out the lights.

Church body alleges govt ‘harassment’

Posted:09:34 Feb-6-2008 Filed under: Religion, Islam Badawi

Malaysia’s government should stop harassing Christians by seizing their Bibles especially at entry points, the country’s biggest church group said yesterday amid a new furore over the imports of the holy book.

The Christian Federation of Malaysia’s statement came a day after a Malaysian Christian complained that airport custom officers seized 32 English Bibles on her arrival from Manila.

Federation chairman Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing said the incident, which happened on Jan. 28, was not an isolated case.

“We have received many complaints from Christians being told to hand over religious books to custom officers at various checkpoints in the country,” he said in a statement. “Now they even want our Bibles.” ”Continued”

No Allah After All for Malaysian Christians

Posted:15:56 Jan-7-2008 Filed under: Islam Badawi

by Imran Imtiaz Shah Yacob, AsiaSentinel, Jan 7.

The Malaysian cabinet’s decision late last week to reinstitute the cancellation of a Roman Catholic newspaper’s publishing license for using the word “Allah” interchangeably with “God” in its Malay-language section has little to do with theology and a lot to do with Malay fears that Christians may be secretly converting members of the Islamic faith.

“They believe that Christians in Malaysia, as in much of the rest of the Asian world, are on an evangelical mission,” said a Kuala Lumpur-based Muslim with access to the thinking of government leaders.

“There are Asian missionaries attempting to convert actively in Malaysia, and confusing Muslims, so the word ‘Allah’ has been banned. The churches have been trying to use Bahasa Malaysia (the Malay language) and attribute the one God in Islam as Allah in Christianity, so as to pull more Malays into the church.” ”Continued”

Religious Courts Win Again

Posted:16:55 Dec-30-2007 Filed under: Social, Religion, Legal, Islam Badawi

AsiaSentinel, Dec 30.

Malaysia has found itself once again in middle of a messy religious and judicial controversy after the country’s highest court earlier this week threw out a bid by a 28-year-old Indian woman who took her estranged husband to court in an effort to prevent him from converting the couple’s 2-year-old son to Islam.

The woman, a Hindu housewife and secretary identified only as R Subashini, went to the courts in an effort to prevent her 32-year-old businessman spouse, T Saravanan, who assumed the name Muhammad Shafi Saravan Abdullah and converted to Islam in 2006, from taking matrimonial proceedings to Malaysia’s syariah, or religious court. ”Continued”

Church sues over book ban

Posted:18:09 Dec-24-2007 Filed under: Islam Badawi

by Soon Li Tsin, malaysiakini, Dec 24.

A Sabah church is suing the government and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in his capacity as internal security minister for not allowing the import of Christian literature from Indonesia containing the word ‘Allah’.

Sabah Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) Church president Pastor Jerry Dusing filed the suit on behalf of the church at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Dec 10 after six titles for their Sunday school education for children were banned from being imported.

The church is also asking the court to compel the minister to return the consignment of materials that were ‘unlawfully detained’ by customs officers at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal on Aug 15. ”Continued”
